Someone once told me that they hated and i mean hated African stuff when it comes to fashion. To be honest there was a time in my life when i would have agreed but as i grew and looked more for inspirations around me i realised i had been a complete idiot the whole time. So i recently have made a pact with myself... i shall embark on a journey to change peoples minds (it's unfortunate that i was not on a windy mountain talking to my private army when i said this but hey...) With this series, i will keep you in touch with the very creative African - inspired designers and their work.
And who better to start with than BOXING KITTEN?

So the designer may not be African herself but she has studied African - American cultures and uses Ankara fabric from West Africa. Brooklyn born Maya Amina Lake is none other than the amazing lady behind these designs.

Maya's work is inspired by Vintage clothing from the 50's and 60's (which automatically makes her my most favourite person in the world) She has been sweeping successful - Boxing Kitten has been featured in magazines like Vogue, been seen on red carpets, also celebrities like Solange and Beyonce Knowles, Fergie have been spotted wearing the brand.

The thing with these pieces is that they are so versatile and fresh in the fashion world since prints are in and also African Fashion has always played the underdog part hence its success, her inspirations merge African Culture with a fashionable era a little case of mix and match. Check out their
WEBSITE and marvel at more of Maya's stuff.
